Default 7.3L PSD 2002 broke?

I was driving from a light under light acceleration on a up grade when the turbos seemed to just kick in, a loud pop occured and then a high pitched metal ricochett sound occured. Power decreased suddenly and a small amt of black smoke appeared. I pulled over and the truck was ideling fine. I got out and no leaks or odd engine sounds occured. When the truck was revved it seemed fine but without the turbo effect. I have pulled the turbo and see no obvious mechanical problem as the wheels turn with ease. There seems to be some oil on the exhaust side. Fuel mielage decreased over past 3-4 weeks. Mielage is 65,000. What could have happened?

hey, when you pulled the turbo, did you notice any play in the wheel? the fact that it was in LIGHT acceleration makes me wonder. You checked your wastegate? it could have got stuck open. also check your EBPV, since it could have been closed and is now stuck. do you have gauges? a pyrometer and boost gauge would be essential here! good luck

It was the journal bearing in the turbo. All is well now except the fuel mielage. I am running 33 x 15.5 tires and getting between 10 and 12 miles per gallon with easy city driving. Prior to turbo failure and tires I was getting 16.5 in town. I expect it is the tires but i did not expect such a change in mielage on a diesel with bigger tires. Any ideas on mielage?
