new to site. I have a 2004 4x4 lifted 6.6 duramax diesel w/ 2 blown head gaskets . looking for a new crate engine. Any suggestions? it cheaper to replace the engine than to repair the gaskets. However,GM only offers a rebuilt engine
thx

Considering you can buy the complete gasket kit for that engine for about 400$ I think it would be just a tiny bit cheaper to do the head gaskets then a new engine..

being a duramax owner myself, i understand where it might be close to the same price to get a different engine. labor and parts, it cost close to $4k to change head gaskets. but if you can find someone to do them on the side, or if you could do them, itll save you thousands. you could get a used engine with under 100k miles on it for $3000. but if you can do them urself, id go that route.

Have you priced a Duramax longblock? Where are you finding them for $3000?

My boss, who does diesel mechanic work on the side has a 6.0L powerstroke, that had a cracked head, he studded his and used black onyx head gaskets when he put it back together, he said they're the best diesel gaskets on the planet. May want to look into those since you can get them for less than $100 a piece.
