New Guy from Central Texas that needs info!

Hey what's up fellas, my name is Jason and I am 23. I have a '99 Z28 as a project car and have a '94 Geo Prizm as a daily grinder. Anyways, I think my Geo is about to kick the bucket and I would really like to get myself into a Silverado/Sierra 1500. I would prefer a 1999-2006 year with a V8 and an automatic. 4WD isn't really a big deal to me so I guess I could save some money on that. I would prefer a dark interior over a light (tan) interior. I would also prefer a smooth side? (not a step side) bed. However, after that I am pretty much lost as far as which options are out there/I am interested in. Is there a thread on this site where I could compare and contrast different generations/model years so I can figure out exactly what truck I want so that I know what to look for before I buy?
Thank you in advance for all of the welcomes and I am looking forward to learning a lot here!

I would aim for a v8 at least. you can pick up a v6 but they are pretty under powered for the weight of these trucks. You should be able to find a 4.8l single cab for pretty cheap. If the funds are there the 5.3l would be even better. Also the support for the v8 comunity is huge. If you have a problem chances are people on this site have delt with it. There aren't many v6's around here. But bottom line any of the engines GM puts in these vehicles will last a long time. Good luck truck hunting!

Thank you!
Definitely getting a V8. Got my eye on a 2001 pewter v8, auto trans, 2 wd, dark interior extended cab. he wants 9K. 77K miles. the guy is selling it because his dad died, his son drove it while in college in san diego for a year about 2 years ago. brake job done recently, new fuel pump, front tires replaced one year ago, rears 6 months ago. his son needs college money, so obviously, he can come down a bit. what would you pay for this truck/ how much do you think it is worth?
