well being from california... im not sure how strict emissions ar ethere... but ill assume they are as crappy as here...
you have alot of options... what kind of budget are you looking at first??
have you ever done any performance small block builds before??
how much power are you looking at wanting to make realistically?

Thanks. yea emissions are strict up here but i have a buddy who can take care of the smog ****.....budget isnt really that much of an issue right now, ive rebuilt a couple engines, but nothing high performance or fuel inj. just stock carburated stuff. i am very familiar with the vortec tho. im lookin to build somethin in the 400hp range. i want to run a supercharger or turbo for sure.......

Here is my setup:
- 1999 2dr Tahoe 4x4
- Stock L31 (stock bottom, heads and cam) 140K miles on engine
- Whipple Supercharger w/ 2.75" pulley, 9.5lbs boost
- Mercruiser vortec intake manifold w/ 42lb injectors
- Alkycontrol meth injection (injected pre blower)
- Dual 3" MagnaFlows X-piped
- 3" Magnaflow metallic cats
- Hooker Competition Long tube Headers
- Built FLT Level 4 4L60E
- PI 10.5" 3-disk 2800 RPM Torque Converter
- MSD 6A ignition + MSD plug wires
- NGK TR6 plugs gapped @ 0.040
- Stock Intake with K&N drop in filter
- 9.5" 14 bolt SF w/ 4.10s & Auburn LSD
- Flex-a-lite 280 electric fans
It put down 330.5 rwhp @ 4681 rpm and 449.3 rwtq @ 3234 rpm on the dyno.
I just ran 14.153 sec @ 95.051 mph. Truck weighs 5600 lbs with me in it.
Once my motor gives, if it ever does, I'm going to do a full rebuild. I still haven't decided on what I'm going to do with the bottom end but I think I'm going to stick with 350 ci. Heads will probably be AFR 195s and for a cam, I kinda like the stock LT4 cam or maybe something more aggressive.
The following forum has a lot of good info for us vortec guys:

Another note if you don't know: The stock vortec intake manifold with the 19lb poppet injectors can only support 400 crank hp or close to 330 rwhp. If you are going to stick with the vortec engine and go forced induction or big cubes, I would suggest a new intake manifold that allows for external injectors. If your buddy can get you by smog, then there are a couple options for you: Mercruiser Vortec Intake like mine, GMPP ramjet, Holley Stealthram?, or go with a carb intake and modify it for injectors and a thottle body.

Also as far as superchargers go, both Whipple and Magnacharger stopped making kits for the vortec trucks. If I was going to buy a new supercharger right now for my truck I would go with Procharger. Their kit includes an intercooler and you can upgrade their head units easily if you go bigger cubes.
If you can get by smog, you can also go turbo and do something custom like this:
