I tried doing a compression test on my engine today and either my tester is shot (My friend just used it on his 97 350 last week) or the motor has less than 30 lbs of compression in each cylinder.
If I have to rebuild this engine is it any harder than a regular chevy engine?
Where would I look to find the pin location on the factory plug to wire in my stand alone harness?

 

I tried to do another test tonight. Still not much compression in any cylinder. If you put you hand over the exhaust port it sucks your hand in and out like it should when your fingure is in the spark plug whole. I am going to use my friends tester in a couple days to see if I have any better luck.
Am I right in thinking at this point I might have cam issues?

pull the valve covers..... very easy to do and could tell you if it has bent valves or broke timing chain....id bet its the rings though...

 

I have tried several times to get a compression reading. I have turned the motor over with a ratchet, impact gun, a different compression tester and I even tried hooking up the starter and turn it over that way. The starter tested bad and I havent went and got a new one. I am going to get one this weekend when I get apid and try the starter method again.
I still have the harness and the computer I went for almost 800.00 new. make me an offer.

 

drain the oil, pull the pan and take a look to make sure you have noting in it.

 

The guy I bought the motor from changed the oil pan over to a conversion pan. He refilled the pan but never ran it.

 

Try pouring a cap full of auto trans fluid in the cylinders and spinning it over a bit before testing again. If the engine sat for that long it may have a little surface rust on the cylinder liners and this will help the rings re-seat. You will definitely need to spin it with the starter to get an accurate reading.

 

Thanks for the tip. I have put the motor on the back burner for the moment due to lack of funds.
I have decided to just rebiuld the motor before I put it in my truck. It sat for too long with no oil in the pan so I can only guess that the bearings, lifters, and ever gasket will be dry and give me more problems that what I will want to work around later.
I might go .030 over just for fun or has anybody tried to biuld a stroker motor yet?
