Would the short blocks be the same at least? Or are they different as well.
He's had the heads reworked so those are good to go. If the CPI heads will mate to a TBI block, that will expand our options for finding a donor.

I found out a little while ago that there is metal in the oil. Very fine shavings, I guess, because he described the oil has having a metallic sheen.
I've found some decently priced long blocks but does anyone know of a company that does short blocks on the cheap side but still quality? I've checked Jasper and the parts store chains and all are way, way too expensive.

There are tremendous differences between the "vortec" 4.3 heads and the heads before it. The motor you have is essentially the same one used in the typhoons just with a few changes obviously the intake.. BUT it's a non balance shaft engine. Which I would bet dollars to doughnuts it also has a Chip based prom.
