One of my customers just bought a 2002 lightning with 18000 miles. When he took it to the dealership for a brake switch recall they asked him if he wanted the ses light fixed. The dealership replaced the lower intake gaskets and the maf and charged him $1400 dollars. The light still comes on they said they could not fix it do to the performance parts. The only obvious parts it has is a shiny aluminum lower pulley and rather large conical air filter. We think they may have swiped his performance maf. The Long term fuel trims show to be adding 20 to 25% fuel at idle and at low load conditions. Does anyone know what the diameter of the stock pulleys is. If the pulleys can somehow affect fuel trims at idle and if the maf has to be calibrated for a conical air filter. One last note he never noticed the ses light himself, but it had surged a little the day before and that is why he let them work on it.

First off, they can fix the light they just wont. The aftermarket parts are their out. The filter shouldnt have any negative effect (assuming it fits and is in working order) and wouldnt require any tuning changes. The maf on the truck is a 90mm unit. It should work fine 95% of the time with up to a 6lb lower(appx 9" diameter) The stock L lower is 7.5"
Why did they mess with the lower intake gaskets and maf?

They were probably suspecting unmetered air as the source of the problem and were trying to track down where it was coming from. I'd say that there's a good chance he's running out of MAF in this cooler air we had last week. To answer your concern tho, unless he HAD a performace MAF on the truck, like an SCT or otherwise, then they didn't swipe it. These things just came with a regular 90mm Ford MAF sensor.
Anyhow, lean codes are a bitch to track down, lol. Good luck figuring it out.

Its sets the code at low speeds and idle, so I don't think the maf was maxed out. They didnt have the parts to perform the recall so it may have to go back. The reasons we thought they may have swiped the maf 1. they wouldn't show him the old one and 2. the one that was on the truck had an aluminum housing and the one on it now is plastic. I plan to go down through the through the normal step check fuel pres check for vac leaks again. It shows lean on both banks so I doubt its a o2. I know some of the mafs they used to sell for 5.0 mustangs were tuned differently for cold air intakes and different air filter styles. Thats why I asked about the filter. Thanks for the input.

Hahaha, no ****? I haven't met anyone else in the state with my last name that wasn't family, lol. If I still have it I'll give it some thought. Only bad thing is I can't run your gas that you have down there.
