That could have happened from the fragments getting caught in the seat.

Looks to me like someone tried to play "King Of The Highway" on shitty gas. The rings definatly butted but most likely caused from detonation, and or it leaned out. You need to pull out the other pistons, and check the gap. That will tell you whose fault it is....

I also thought the driver might used the cheap gas, although he was told not. He also stepped on it for sure.

I learned a hard lesson, never let someone else drive your modified ride.

I doubt it is ring gap. I bought the short block from a good engine builder and it ran perfect for more than 6-months with me stepping on it and driving offroad even during hot summer days with no issues.

It might be in the tune or failed fuel pump or injectors. I will pull the tune file and post it later.

My father in law bought a new vette in 07. He was complaining about the price of 93 octane. Knowing how he is, I told him very boldly to not put anything less than 91 in it. Well then next time I saw him he says, "man that thing don't like cheap gas!" "It was bucking and knocking"....ect. Some people just don't understand.

Look, we can all think all the things we want in this case. What you have to do is look at all the things that can happen. Here is what I would check for.

#1: Check to see how much oil was in the intake runners and in the manifold itself. You could of been detonating more and more over time because of oil in the air charge.

#2: Now that you have it apart, check the ring gaps on the other rings. This will confirm your gap theory.

#3: Send your injectors out and have them checked. Doesn't hurt to do a cleaning and check them at the same time.

#4: Your tune dont matter at this point, its already broken. Each engine combination is different, so unless we see something like 28-34 degrees of timing under the WOT area, I wouldnt start blaming it just yet. And 12.8 AFR is just a number. Like the others said here, the plugs tell the whole story. Some motors love 13.0 AFR, some love 12.2, its all just what it wants.

check these simple things and it should get your somewhere. Maybe someone else can add to my list, but it is early right now and thats all I could muster.

As you said, every engine is different. Mine likes 31* total timing @ wot and 93 octane.
