cool. My plans are to put a fully forged vortec 350 im my sonoma. Only thing is i am having problems finding a 96-99 block around here, but i can find other blocks fine. So that is why i was wondering. If the crank and cam sensors wont be a problem with the older block the i'll just do that and through my e-tec's on there and use the rest of the vortec's efi for ease of installation into my noma.

Is there any where that sells new 96-99 blocks or the other ones? Or even forged short blocks for those years?

And also are you saying that all 87 and up blocks have the 1 pc seal?

Yep for the most part. Also, if your looking for a 350 short block, look at GM's zz4 short block. That's the best way to go in my opinion. Comes with 10:1 compression pistons, 4 bolt mains, 1 piece rear main, balanced and ready for your heads, cam, etc.

where is the crank sensor at on the vortec 350? The cam sensor is on the timing cover correct? Doesn't that zz4 have hyper pistons?

The cam sensor is in the distributor really but there is another one that goes through the cover yes. Yes, the zz4 is hyper. pistons but they will be fine unless you plan on boost or nitrous then I would suggest a full forged built engine. But if your going NA with 500hp then you will be fine. The crank sensor is in the front of the crankshaft if I remember correctly.

What's exactly your plans?

The early blocks are interchangable. I have a 383 in my 98 OBS Vortec. The block is a 4 bolt main, the sensors are in covers and othe bolt on parts. Nothing in the blocks. The biggest difference are the heads. The vortec heads have straight bolts verses the angled on the other manifolds, and you can convert the older block to a one piece rear main. You can use the older blocks and put the parts off your vortec directly on them. Worked for me!!!

my plans are a fully forged 350 or maybe 383 with a remote mount turbo. Will the accesory brackets off my vortec 4.3 fit on all of the 87-up blocks?

Yea....they should. If you are going fully forged, then I would suggest a 2 bolt with billet splayed 15* 4 bolt conversion then go from there....its by far stronger than a 2 bolt or regular 4 bolt.
