Default Valve spring choice

I was planning a TSP 220/220 .581/.581 for my 4.8, but also hearing alot of people recommend the TR220 which is 220/220 .551/.551. The good thing about the TR220 is I can swing by and pick one up as they are somewhat local.

Ive always been one that sees extra lift as free power, but wondering if the TR220 may serve me just fine.

So to my question.

IF I decide to go with the TR220, will LS6 springs work OK? I have a set I was planning on using in my other truck, but can pick them up for less than 1/2 what a set of new PAC 918's cost.

If I need the 918's either way (as thunder recommended) what cam would you pick and why?

The actual cam I had decided on is a custom Comp through TSP at 220/220 .581/.581 110 +4. If I go with the TR, I think itll be either a 220/220 .551/.551 112, unless I can get it +4

I'd go with the PAC 1218's either way because even though the TR220 falls into the lift capabilities of the LS6 springs, I'd be concerned with the seat pressure of those springs. The PACs have 130# of closed seat pressure vs. 90# for the LS6's, and the TR cams are advertised as having aggressive ramp rates. This is just my recommendation and what I'd do, there are guys running around out there with TR cams and yellow LS6 springs and no problems, but I like the extra insurance of the added seat pressure. The nice thing about LS6 springs is that they are kind to the valvetrain and I'm a firm believer of using them whenever possible.

Tough choice between the TR and TSP, and a "debate" that I've been curious about too. I see the added lift of the TSP as "free horsepower" just like you mentioned, but on the other side of the coin, TR's proprietary lobes and proven track record is very intriguing...if I had to make the choice I'd probably be up at night for weeks going back and forth myself...I've always kinda liked Thunder Racing though...

Nothing much to add to Bud's post; great advice and the same that I would give.

Don't think there's a "bad" choice out of the 220 cams; slight edge in peak numbers probably to TSP's, but over all averaged numbers are going to be pretty close.

Either choice would be great. I like my TR220, but im sure I wouldnt notice the difference in the TSP220

I don't think you would really notice a diff. Between the two cams... The dyno may show some diff. Numbers but I doubt its anything you will be able to feel. I ran the tr220 in my 5.3 and loved it that's a great 5.3 cam. Sounds awesome pulls awesome and works great with a 3k-3200 converter. More lift may seem like more power but you also have to look at your heads to if they won't flow it then you might actually lose power having more lift then what your setup can handle. Just food for thought but both are great cams

I run 918s on my personal vehicle and on almost anything I build for the street. Just have them send the springs with the cam you choose.

I also run the lightweight tool steel retainers as well. #1772-16
