Default Used cam into used block break in

Howdy,

I'm putting a used cam into my 140k 5.3. I'm assuming I need to do a normal break in....use non synthetic oil. What about oil additives? Any other procedure I should do? Thanks!

Careful not to drop a lifter. And I use rotella T in both of my 6.0s.

You do however need to take new valve springs through a heat cycle or 2 before you beat on them. Are you replacing those? If you are then a break in burnout would be a bad idea...

Thanks for the info. I'm putting in a comp 212/218 low lift in with new ls6 springs and a set of trick flow hardened pushrods. I'm also doing the trunion upgrade while I have the rockers off.

I also agree with heat cycling the valve-springs before letting her rip. While I always give a love tap to the top of each valve-stem with a rubber mallet to make sure the valve-locks are fully seated, I like to take it easy for just a bit to make sure everything has a chance to bite in hard. It’s never happened to me, but I have seen it where someone didn’t fully have a couple of the valve-locks seated and turned around and spit them back out while still setting in the garage idling. The fellow got extremely lucky, as only one of the two came out and it just cocked the retainer without dropping the valve.
