IMO, that will pass with a decent tune. You can also run some denatured alcohol in the tank to cut down on the emissions.

In 2013, CA is doing away with the sniffer part of the smog test for 00+ cars. They will only have the visual and functional (OBDII) tests. In theory, you can use as big of a cam as you want. I'm not sure what they can do if it sounds or smells cammed. No one is really sure yet. They might tighten up on the functional test as in no more tuned PCM's. Who knows...

All California pump gas that I have seen is E10 or 10% Ethanol (denatured alcohol) already, unless you find a station that sells straight gas.

I can't see how adding more ethanol to "lean it out" btu wise will help that much with HC emissions when a cam is allowing to much blow through at Exh. close and Int. open. Might help a tad, but just make sure to get your mechanical side of things in order with a good tune. Find a place that has an exhaust gas analyzer and see if your tuner can come with you to run the tests and make adjustments if needed to get "in range."

Edit: After reading some more, it seems that do to lower btu content, the higher Alcohol content in the fuel will encourage a cooler combustion event which "should" lower NOX emissions.

 

I was under the impression that denatured alcohol simply does not produce the as much pollutants when burned.

Anyways, I did 3-4 gallons of gas to 1 gallon of alcohol and it worked fine. I just made sure to fill it up with gas right after the smog.

 

Denatured alcohol is the same as ethanol right? Could I use ever clear for this? Where so you get denatured alcohol. Thanks

 

I too heard they are the same. I used some stuff from Home Depot, came in an orange/blue metal can. But that was ~6 years ago. Do this at your own risk, of course.
