Default Ross pistons and KR

Gotta buddy of mine with an '03 Hemi Ram with the STS system. After he blew his engine, he rebuilt most of it back stock except for some billet rods and Ross 9:1 pistons. He gets a lot of KR. Like 8 or 9 degree's. Stock cam, stock heads but .8 lower compression. He put in 3 gallons of race fuel with less than 1/8 tank of gas and it didn't even effect the KR.

Has anybody ever heard of forged piston "chatter" causing the knock sensors to pick up knock? When his engine is cold, it'll chatter like a diesel and then pretty much goes away when it's warm. But I wonder if there is still something in there that the sensors pick up.

From what I hear piston slap is a totally different harmonic/frequency. It may be a tuning issue.

I just caught the last 3 minutes of horsepower tv. Funny KR came up. They were showing new valvesprings for an LS1 and stated that they were designed to run on up to 6000rpms w/o triggering your knock sensors.

I believe my friend useds his original valvetrain from the original engine blow. Could something in that be triggering knock? Does that carry the frequency?

It shouldnt rattle like a diesel at start up either. Sounds like he should invest in a wide band to start. He could quite simply be lean at those times.

Only other thing would be a loose exhaust hanger or bracket somewhere that vibrates and triggers the KR sensors.

When does he get the KR? Only at wide open throttle or during normal cruise, part throttle?

The 2618 alloy forged pistons will make more noise at startup due to the fact that they run more skirt clearance because they expand more than the 4032's. I don't know if that could be affecting the KR though, I would definetly get it on the wideband.

He can take a/f down to 10.6 and still pick up 8 degree's KR. Today he unhooked his turbo and put a filter on the TB and still picked up KR. So it's just not boost causing it.

Hemifever.... just out of curiosity, I put rubber washers on the bolt for my knock sensors, isolating it.... it just takes enough torque to hold the sensor in place.... I do not have a datalogger but I wanted to see if my times at the track improved... but it was an idea you may want to try...

MrDestinE, I've recommended he unhook the sensors completely and make a short "burst" run to try and hear audible knock. I don't really believe its actually knocking. The rubber washers is also an idea and I know my friend is reading this so he may have to try that as well.

He's going to put a 1/4 tank of 103 octane in there to an empty tank to test one more time that high octane doesn't affect it. After that he'll start messing with the sensors. He's still in problem determination mode right now.

I had my 5.7L LS1 rebuilt with Ross pistons and, like you said, it rattles like a diesel on cold start then quiets down as it gets to operating temp.
