Default Ported head q's

I though that you could hand port heads? I talked to a local guy today at the machine shop. We started talking about heads and flow rates etc.. and he said that he cannot port heads at his place cause he didnt have a bench flow. Now, I know that to get crazy as* with it you need a bench flow, but cant you still just do a average type job without a bench flow? Thanks guys just need a little clarification, he kinda confused me.

you can do it yourself but the ls heads are easily jacked up. they aren't like most other cylinder heads and really should be left to people that have done them before and know to not hog them out. i'm am currently having someone do mine.

I would say you could polish the ports nice and smooth by hand.
but if your going to start removing material to make them larger I have to say leave it someone that knows how and has the right equipment to do it.

i have seen allot of LS1 heads messed up because the upper side of the port is thin,
you can make a hole real quick if you take too much.

Yeah I agree im not going to do it myself, just was confused cause he said he didnt have a bench flow, didnt know you need one. I thought bench flow was for crazy stuff, as in racing aplications where it had to be dialed in perfectly. Thanks all.
