My truck is a 2007 nnbs Sierra 1500 ccsb Vortec Max. My plans are to turbo it down the road and I'm wondering what would be a good cam to go with it. The vvt and afm will be coming out. Right now the only mods its got are Pacesetter LTs, a Volant cai and a Blackbear tune.
I guess I'd consider it a "daily driver" but its really nothing more than a toy since I don't drive it to work, it usually only gets driven a couple times a week if that. I don't have any intentions of taking it to the track. I very rarely have towed anything and don't foresee doing much more, but I'd still like to be able to. I'd like a nice lopey idle but nothing too wicked. I dont have a problem with doing a higher stall converter either. Maybe I'll do a 4l80 at the same time. When I get bottomless pockets, that is
Also, I'm planning on attempting this myself.. The most I've done on a vehicle are LT's.. Is it a bad idea for me to do it myself? I'll be taking it to be dyno tuned.
The bank still owns it so until its mine I'll just collect be collecting parts. Any advice is more than appreciated
First off what engine do you have, and you need to figure out if it does in fact have both vvt and dod before you order parts you dont need...and being an 07 is it an nbs or nnbs??
Easy way to tell if you have dod is it look at the valley cover and if it looks like a worm got caught in the mold it is dod if its smooth its non dod.... Vvt you will need to look behind the water pump and look for the phaser or just the cam sensor.... Other way is to crawl under the truck and on the driver side of the timing cover there will be a connector if it has 5 wires its vvt if it has 3 its non vvt....
It isnt a bad idea to do by yourself if you have an idea what youre getting into....just do research and find some sort of how to to refer back to during the process and take your time the first time

It says in my first sentence nnbs and Vortec Max lol. So it's the L76 6.0L. To the best of my knowledge all the truck L76's came with both vvt and afm, but I will check both when I get home. I know it has afm though, because it would go into 4 cyl. mode before it was tuned.
That's good to hear on doing it myself.. which brings me to my next question, is it easier to pull the motor or do the work with the motor in the truck?

Reason: Typo
Just doing cam and lifters in the truck would be the way to go, however if you find you need cam bearings or something that will be a different story all together....
Actually it is more work because you have to pull the heads to change lifters and trays to get rid of the dod lifters, even if you decide to keep the dod, the heads will have to come off the dod lifters wont stay in the trays and allow you to swap cams like the non dod lifters will.... Just for a visual in case youve never seen the difference...
Non dod standard lifter on the left....dod on right

I haven't seen the difference before, thank you.
As for the vvt, are you positive these motors don't have it? Google has been saying otherwise..
Ifyou take the water pump off youll know for sure.....unless you can seebehind itand see the magnet plate boltedtothe timingcover nextto the cam sensor but 07 was either or.... Not both

Alright, I'll take a look when I get home thank you
