I was just wondering if I should upgrade to titanium retainers with my new cam. I know people have reused the stock retainers, but when is upgrading to the titanium retainers necessary. Cam is a TR 224/227, with the Comp 918 springs. I don't plan on seeing over 6200rpm since I haven't replaced the rod bolts.

I'm sorry to veer off topic here but, if you're looking for a max of 6200-rpm the TR224/227 probably isn't the camshaft for you. It'll make peak power at or around 6200-rpm depending on the installed intake centerline. You'll be wasting a bunch of powerband by using those sized lobes suited for an operating range you wont even see.

 

Yeah spin it up higher than 6200 for sure. I'm using the stock retainers and I'm spinning mine up to 6500 almost everyday and I have a 222/224. With that big of a cam I'd at least spin it to 66-6700. Snake Eater on here says he spins his to and un-godly 7300 on stock springs !!! I'm not sayin to spin it that high but 65-6600 and you should be safe...

Does he have the stock rod bolts? I've heard that if you plan on spinning past 6200rpm you should replace the stock rod bolts.

 

Your retainers should be fine. I wouldn't worry about swapping to titanium till around 7500 rpm.

 

7300 on stock springs I just dont see that happening. 01Thunder spun his 4.8 up to 7300 on the dyno and hes was sweating after that and he has aftmarket springs.

 

hmmm....i guess i'll get the rev limiter set between 6500-6800rpm. this sound ok?

 

Mine is set at 6500. I think it could be a little higher, but I have over 100k miles so oh well. It does pull strong till then though.

you know when i did my swap using the 918s i was planning on using the stock retainers, but called comp just in case. this is my daily driver and had to make sure for reliability. comp said they really don't recommend using the stock retainers with the 918s because of the slop created from the differences in the ID of the retainer and the ID of the top of the spring. i ran and grabbed some steel comp retainers and compared the stock and comp retainers on the 918 and it was an eye opener to say the least. bet there was 1/16" of slop using the stock retainer.

i know alot of you will disagree and say that using the stock retainer with the 918s is perfectly fine and while i don't disagree with you, if i had used the stock retainer mr. murphy would have showed his ugly mug the first time i nailed it. if he didn't, me and mr. ****/ocd would have been paranoid about it until i wound up changing them out. fwiw.
