what's wrong with stock rod bolts? or a better question. how many trucks have you seen on this forum actually break a stock rod bolt? i cant think of 1. i can however get on tech and find a few cars that spin a rod bearings 1,500 miles or less after upgrading to new rod bolts.

the way i look at it, if it is a fresh motor being built, go ahead and upgrade the rod bolts. after the motor has some miles on it and everything is settled, leave it alone! everything is already sitting where it wants to be and any minor adjustments is enough unlodge some stuff you dont want unlodged...i spun a 150,000 mile ls1 past 7k for years before it broke. i shattered a rod.

but the rod bolts were still in there just fine! hell, it was a 99model LS1 engine with the "weaker" rod bolts than they use in todays LS engines.

Power has nothing to do with rod bolts, only rpm. Power pushes the rod onto the crank, only rpm pulls it away if that makes sense to you.

I under stand the concept here but wheres the rpm point that i need to add the bolts.

Everything on my motor is capable of 7k except for the short block. I didnt plan to run it past 6500 but i really wont know until i drive it and see hoe it feels.

So is the short block.

I know a bunch of people that spin them up to 68-7200 with no probs on stock rod bolts.

It's not about breaking, its about stretching... Higher tensile strength bolts resists this.

Did you find out what made the rod shatter? It wasn't because the rod bolts stretched, was it?
