yeah that's the easy way out ,. . but the DOD lifters are still there (which Suc* ) + DOD valley cover which is prob like 15 psi lower oil pressure than NON-DOD ...

What would be the worst thing that could happen if one of those DOD lifters fails? Engine stops running and I need to replace the lifters anyways?

My thought would be if I tear that far into the motor, why don't I replace those heads?

.. the worst it could happen (blown engine)

if a lifter fails- there goes ur cam/pistons . .

i've seen it happen where DOD lifter fail at High lift cam's and damages pistons+cam...

.. why dont you just do it right the 1st time..

ls7 lifter's run $120 + LS2/7 valley cover runs $50.. that's all you need. / and its a safe insurance +you can run high lift cam's + sping it all way 7000RPM w/out any problem's...

It's not so much the parts that are the problem. Just pulling the heads off might take this to a whole differant level for this guy. I also think that if I was to tear the motor up that much, I might As well put differant heads back on since it will be such a time investment for me.

What would make these DOD lifters fail more likely with the new cam? Lift? Is there anyone running a milder cam with the dod lifters?

If I was to put new heads on my 5.3, what would make sense?

Sorry for high jacking this thread.

Here ya go:

208/216 .554”/.561” 114LSA +4 camshaft (single bolt)
CompCams pushrods
CompCams 26918 valve springs

Plus, 1 5/8" shorties, and under/over drive pulleys.

Net result: 316rwhp/327rwtq SAE 5.
Tuning added about 15 hp/tq. Only about 10 rwhp/lbtq additional camshaft power under 3500 RPM.

Like lucky77 said all you need are those mian parts I just listed everything..since you are already there like most say... just do it right..and i wanted to give the parts numbs for the extra piece..no new gaskets or bolts will eave you waiting around for a tow truck and then your back to tearing it down
