A stock ported pump will net a minor increase in volume... very minor actually. Yes, shimming the spring will net a little more pressure. Both work well together if you want to see a bit more pressure throughout the RPM range.

Sorry grippy if I wasn't much help... I just don't think messing with the pump will net you any benefit for a cam swap. Sure ported and shimmed pumps add a little to volume and pressure but is it a true necessity? I don't think so. Installing one won't hurt... if that helps in the decision making. But the aftermarket pumps for a cam swap are not at all necessary, IMO.

FWIW, I will probably go with a GT2-3 cam (and spring combo) within next 6 months or so... and I have no plans to mess with the pump. I will degree the cam for good measure but I plan on sticking with stock timing parts... other than maybe an LS2 chain upgrade. If my block is drilled / tapped for a chain dampner I'll throw one of those in too.

Best of luck... let us know how it works out

i'm using the 10296, i carry about 75psi all the time, hot or cold. i don't buy into the "pumping the oil pan dry" theory. i've used HV oil pumps on stock olds, chevy and pontiac engines, never any oiling issues. you're going to tell me that there's 4-5 qts of oil floating around in the lifter galley and underneath the valve covers? unless the oil returns are plugged up with sh&* in the heads and you're using straight 50wt oil it's not an issue.

I have the high volume pump on my 408 and I love it, my oil pressure never drops under 60psi.
