Which Melling oil pump and why?

A stock ported pump will net a minor increase in volume... very minor actually. Yes, shimming the spring will net a little more pressure. Both work well together if you want to see a bit more pressure throughout the RPM range.

Sorry grippy if I wasn't much help... I just don't think messing with the pump will net you any benefit for a cam swap. Sure ported and shimmed pumps add a little to volume and pressure but is it a true necessity? I don't think so. Installing one won't hurt... if that helps in the decision making. But the aftermarket pumps for a cam swap are not at all necessary, IMO.
FWIW, I will probably go with a GT2-3 cam (and spring combo) within next 6 months or so... and I have no plans to mess with the pump. I will degree the cam for good measure but I plan on sticking with stock timing parts... other than maybe an LS2 chain upgrade. If my block is drilled / tapped for a chain dampner I'll throw one of those in too.
Best of luck... let us know how it works out
