As in budget gen IV internals rebuild, or ........
You should be more specific on what your priorities are there. HP goal, budget, reliability.... All you've done is open it up to every possibility. Narrow it down some.

Sorry. Probably just stock rebuild. Reliability of course. Although if I can add a bit of power for reasonable that would be good. My truck now is a 2005 Sierra Denali with almost 300k. Stouter 4l65e and rebuilt transfer case 20k ago. Cold air intake, 4.10 gears, and it might have an aftermarket exhaust. Not sure what the Denalis came with. It's a blast to drive and pulls my trailers well. I want to put a fresh motor in it, and then rebuild the one in it for my tahoe.

I have an idea on what you could do for the engine, I would tell you Gen IV rods, some aftermarket pistons, and a slightly improved head, (or at least I think that's my plan). I honestly don't know enough about it though with the wealth of knowledge in here, to give you a good answer.

That engine he is asking about in this thread should already be a GEN 3/4 Hybrid engine.
Possible that someone switched the pistons out or it just came with those, but a 2004.5+ engine will already have the beefcake connecting rods that support 800+ horsepower as they sit. I wouldn't even "rebuild" that engine, just inspect what you think you need to inspect and replace some bearings.
Do the bearings, clean up the cylinder walls with a dingle ball hone if you think it needs it. New piston rings and call it a day. No need to spend thousands of dollars on a full "rebuild" if it doesn't need all that. Toss in a tiny camshaft to bump the power a smidge and get it tuned.

I know a valve made contact with a piston. Not sure how bad. If have to swap pistons I'll put in LQ9 flat tops. Hoping the 317s on it are salvageable. I've read some about running 706 or 799s to bump up compression but I don't really want to have to run 91 octane if I don't have to. Unless it gave the mpgs a boost to compensate. I run 89 in everything. Cam recommendations? I know thats a broad question with a million answers. I need low end more than top end.

Yeah probably. Almost had a kid talked out of an 03 Escalade today for a grand. He said his dad told him it was the water pump but it wouldn't start after he shut it down. I asked him if it turns over now and it started for him. Now he won't respond to me😄.
