Lifter Tray Mod
#2
I've wondered the same thing after reading that book a few times. This a post about it on LS1Tech. As long as you don't crack one while drilling, it sounds like it can't hurt.

I wouldn't. Drilling into plastic is scary. I'd be afraid to put a stress fracture into the plastic and potentially have the tray crack. Thus causing a lifter to spin. Leave well enough alone. People talk but have you ever really seen a LSx motor where the crank bearings starved from the lifters holding too much oil? Only on a autox setup MAYBE.

I don't agree......I did this to the 5.3 set-up and can be done very easily. When I tore down the motor, the lifter trays where fine with 7000rpm shifts. It couldn't hurt. Just use new bits and go in increments until you achieve 1/2 hole.

If you do perform this mod, I'd do as posted above. Use plastic trays that are new and have not been subjected to heat and oils that will make them brittle. You stand less of a chance to impart damage via a stress fracture that you cannot see with your naked eye.

This is correct. I have done this mod on a few motors and there is no way of telling if you are doing anymore good than harm. So I leave them alone now.
