Default let me raddle your brain on this... plz help

okay, so i've been told 243 heads put on a 4.8L will kill my bottom end power but what if i get a cam such as a 210/218 114 that should make up for the loss and port and polish the heads for added benfits.

I'm wanting to do this because of budget reasons..

I have the heads right now using the ls2 heads that would eliminate me from having to buy valvesprings since the lift on the cam is .531"... so i would only need to buy the pushrods, crane cam, and custom tune.. Everything else my brother has for me such as new gaskets, and etc..

What do you guys think? You think its still going to hurt my truck regardless if i put that cam in?

Thanks,
T

you'll never know until you try it you can always go back to the old setup and sell the parts.

I was hoping someone like REX or someone from the Advertised shop sponsors might be able to let me know what they think of this setup?

If they think that it would work then i'll consider doing it.. i dont want to end up spending time and money on something thats just going to make my truck slower. Its hard to make stuff work correctly when your on a budget thats why i'm leaning for help. I really want to use those heads..

Lets see where your going with this.
your 4.8 head has a 61.15 cc chamber and 1.89/ 1.55 valves
with a piston size of 3,779 with a stroke of 3,270 to give you
A compression of 9.49.

your 243 ls1 heads come with a 66.67 cc chamber and 2.00/ 1.55 valves
to work with a piston size of 3,893 with a stroke of 3,622 to give it
A compression of 10.19.

now the 243 heads will flow better but you increased your
chamber size on a smaller piston and a smaller stroke
That will drop your compression down close to a 9.0 or even a 8.9.
their is no cam on this world that will make up the lost power
From the lower compression on your 4.8.
Now a turbo or a supercharger would love this kind of low compression.

the best way to go is to shave 0.20 or 0.30 off of your 4.8 heads to up
Compression from 9.49 to a close 10.0.
Then add your cam for more power.

^yup^
A cam with more duration is only going to cost you even more bottom end, that's why you select a converter stall speed to match up to your cam choice's higher 'come on'.

the 243's flow real good, but it will lower your compression on your 4.8 like pappydan mention, all you need to do is get your 243 heads milled to bump your compression back up... and you will have a slick set-up... also the the springs are good for .570 lift I believe, the ls6 cam is a .551lift.... there is a guy on here "gator" that has those those heads on his 4.8 and is running really good... you'll just have to ask how much to get them milled....?

I've spoken with Keith (Gator) about his setup recently.. He milled his 035"
