Default Help me out here

ive been searching and searching ,but i think im looking for the wrong keywords

im looking for the differences between the LQ4 LQ9 and the L92

so far if i understand right ill be using one of those 3 as my start for my 6.0+ liter build?

ive also seen talk about the LSX LS1 2 6 7 ?

are any of these smog legal in cali?
and what the best one to start with?

and should i build 6.0 or something bigger or?
im just looking for basic input on a cali built engine. possibly going to be bottled.
and is there a list of good parts to use anywhere? i can easily build the engine myself just need a parts list?

and if any of these have been answered before thoroughly in some other post could you please point me in that direction?

::Edit:: or is there any other engines i missed?

::Edit2:: Thanks for any help in advance!

Here's what I can remember off the top of my head. Accuracy not guarenteed (except on LQ9, LQ4, LS6, LS2, LS7)

LQ9 : 10.1:1 6.0L iron block, 317 heads, upgraded rods (over the LQ4)
LQ4 : 9.4:1 6.0L iron block, 317 heads -- everything else is the same (except the tune)

LS1 : 5.7L aluminum block, "ls1 heads"
LS6 : 5.7L aluminum block, "ls6 heads" (I believe these are the same castings as 317s), better cam, block designed to control oil behind the pistons, etc. -- 405-415-425hp C5 Z06 engine
LS2 : 6.0L aluminum block
LS7 : 6.7L aluminum block (505hp C6 Z06 engine)

LSX upgraded block style (nice and strong -- great for boost)

I believe L92 refers to a head package only (or maybe heads and manifold, but I believe the manifold is an L76 or something like that).

Straight out of the box, any of the production engines will have Cali smog numbers (LS1,2,6,7; LQ9; LQ4).

The best one to start with depends on what you want and need...

All out boost motor looking for 9s? LSX. Daily driven 450rwhp street warrior: any of the above

For me, if you are building the engine from the ground up, get an LQ4 or LSX block and go big cube. The LQ4 casting will go to 408 all day long and up to 422 with serious work and planning. The LSX can go into the 47x range... LQ4 is a pretty cheap option (the block is like $400-600 now, the LSX is a significant investment (I believe the blocks are still in multi-thousand range - 1600-2000ish)

As you can see, I'm kind of a boost addict, so I always prefer iron blocks (but am loving my LS2 for a daily driver).

The L92 is also the aluminum 6.2 that comes in the GMT900 Denali and Cadillac versions. Nor sure how different it is from the new 6.2L LS3

also the LS7 is a &.0L Alum block... not 6.7...I'll 4give you its a honest typo ;-)

I think the LQ9 also had Flat top pistons where as the LQ4 had a dished desighned ones. For what ever your looking to build it all depends on what your looking to spend. I see you may want to go bottled, then go with forged pistons and rods, ARP fasteners in the bottom end and head bolts or studs. If you have the money, the LS7 with 7.0L would be the cats *** but its around $12,000 for a new one. You could build a 402-408 with a 6.0L block and a 4.00" crank from the after market which would be cheaper. It really depends on how far you feel you want to go and also how big the wallet is. What engine do you have now?

Yep, that's where the compression difference comes from. The LQ9 rods are stronger from what's been reported. I'd still do forged if you are building it for a power adder.

2004 and newer LQ4s and LQ9s had the same "upgraded" rods i'm pretty sure. so 2004 and newer the only difference was the flat top pistons to the dished ones.

the LSX tall deck can go as big as 511 cubic inches, but wouldn't be good for boost at max bore & stroke
