Default which flex hone to use..

I melted a piston and near the top of the cylinder theres some scratches in an isolated area the size of a quarter. they are not gouges. but you can feel them.

im planning on removing that piston and honing out the cylinder till the scratches are pretty well gone. and installing a new piston and rings.

I cant afford to spend much on this fix. and ive heard that this could be a good way to fix it.

this is a 6 month old brand new 9500km 2013 gmc sierra 5.3L.

what I need to know is.....

what grit flex hone (ball hone) to use to remove the scratches. or which combination of hones to use to remove scratches and smooth out cylinder again?

what diameter can I hone this cylinder out to while still using a stock 5.3 piston and rings? like i will measure cylinder 5 and then how much more can i hone out cylinder 7 and use a stock piston. how much over can i go?

i rather not take every piston out and gap them....

is stock ring gap good enough for 10-12 psi 76mm turbo and a mild cam. will be spraying meth and using 94 octane.

im all ears on this one guys.

i however wont be going to an engine shop to spend 3 grand (believe me Alberta is overpriced everything) for a fix i can do in my garage and learn a thing or two along the way...

Usually flex hones come in half inch increments. You would want the 3.500" to 4.00" flex hone tool. Not sure exactly what grit you would need but machine shops will usually hone a cylinder .0005". That would be a good question to ask an experienced machine shop or a sponsor on here. A lot of guys are running stock gaps on 20+ psi set ups but that doesn't necessarily mean it is a good idea
