famous question...camshaft drivability
#11
Oakley you hit the nail on the head, with having both camshafts, springs, and tuning capibilities Im going to try the custom grind first, since its in engine now. If its not satisfactory to "personal preference" then out it comes, in w/ the ls9 cam. Its just hard not try this cam considering the cost of the custom Pat g spec camshaft. Will keep posted on build.....pics will be posted.

This is the famous question. And if I'm being honest, no one is going to be honest with you.
I love it when guys say "I have a 254/260 114+2 cam and it drives like stock"
The cam you mentioned can be pretty tame depending on who tunes it. But it will drive far from stock. If it were my truck, I would go with something smaller for my daily driver especially with it being a heavy but you will get used to the cam after a while. I see no issue daily driving that cam but just know it won't be like stock.

In a 6.o if you bump that up to about -6* of overlap it will be soooo much better to drive and behave a lot better with that small converter. It will literally sacrifice almost no manners when combined with the converter you have. On a stock converter you would still feel that.
218/228 114+3. It will pull just about as high as the cam that was spec'd for you. It will definitely give up a little mid range, but idle manners, and off idle power will be a lot better. It will have a very slight chop to it, but you will hear it and it will work great with that converter. I would expect a cam like that with square port heads to pull 6400 RPM and be fine doing it. It would also be happy with a 6200 RPM shift and not feel like things have been cut short.
Also, on the LS9 cam. Not a godo choice. it will idle and behave just like stock. It will kill your dynamic compression, mid range will be lazy, but it'll pull to the moon!!! lol. That cam would be happy with a 7k RPM shift point without the maggie. Dont do it...

Im gonna treat your opinions (350ss & Oakley) like a been there done that type thing. Thanks...where do we go from here hmmmmm....Ls9 camshaft is going to be a table lamp for man cave, custom grind staying in for now, going with a slightly larger convertor, its new and can easily be sold.
If the mix is unsatisfactory, then a new grind is in the works.
