Default enlighten me on 5300# vehicle, 5.38 gears, 41" tires, need motor setup help.

this is for my buddy who is new to LSx motors. he is building a CJ8 (jeep scrambler) for offroading. the CJ8 will weigh around 5300# with 5.38 gears, 41" tires and a double reduction transfer case. motor setup so far. 6L (LQ4), Ls1 intake, custome tune, roller rockers. he is running a stock stall on a build 700R4. he wants a cam with something that wont kill his lowend ( gears, and TC will help) but will lope and be a great runner in the mid to upper RPMs, when he is fly accross the dunes.

he is also looking for some heads that will help it out and thinking higher compression.

this is a budget motor build so please keep that in mind.

i recomended a Tr 224 112 for him but im not a cam god by anymeans.

here is a link to the build

That cam is kind of big for a heavy vehicle with a stock stall. He'll need something like a 210º .556" with a 110ºlsa. You'll get a small amount of lope and have an impressive amount of torque to push all that weight over the sand. Cap it off with a pair of our Stage 2 CNC heads and hang on............

Good luck,

Richard

I would say pick a truck Manifold off of here for cheap and not run the LS1 intake... Unless he is doing it for fitment issues...

i agree. better off idle response in a heavy truck, with the longer intake runners.

more torque at low rpm too. it looks uglier though

as for a cam with a stock stall... maybe around 206/212 or so.. on a 110-112 LSA

This is actually my rig the thread was started about, I just wasn’t able to hop online earlier. My biggest questions at this point are cam and head choice. See below.

I’m looking right now at picking up a set of 853 heads milled .006” with PRC dual valve springs and a TSP 224R cam. I know the stock 317 heads flow really well but I’d like to up the compression for more power. The idea of milling them heavily isn’t very appealing to me. I can get the 853 heads with the springs for about what the springs alone cost. 853s and 317s have the same valve sizes so that’s not a concern. I understand that the 317s flow a bit better than the 853s, but is the difference big enough to negate the power I’d be gaining from the increased compression? I also have a fresh set of 862s sitting in the garage but I figure the smaller valves and decreased flow would really be hurting me there. Any advice on those 3 head choices would be much appreciated. I may go to something like ported LS6 heads in the future, but for now I need to keep it cheap with one of those 3 options. Which will give me the best results?

I know a smaller cam may be more ideal for lowend, but it looks like the 224 range is a nice compromise between mild and extreme. I’m pretty much set on a cam in that range based on what I’ve read and what I’ve seen from friends with similar sizes. The rig will see lots of street use, high speed heavy throttle dune running, and low range rock crawling, so power throughout the RPM range is important.

The Jeep won’t exactly be light, but it’ll be geared appropriately and I’ll have 2.7:1 and 7.4:1 low range available for when the going gets really tough. That’ll help bring the RPMs up in a hurry too.

The LS1 intake is gonna be used solely for clearance reasons, I know it won’t provide any power benefits over the truck manifold. I’m not going LS6 at this point just to save the money, I got the LS1 manifold for dirt cheap.
