awesome! looks like a new heart beat, it does suck that in the name of performance we have to replace drivetrains ,its just hard to spend 30k on a truck then have to do trans / engine replacements, o well, its so much fun to go fast!

I knew I would be doing all this when I started. Just a little sooner than I thought. I at least have a beater now to save some of the wear and tear and allow me time to work on it.

Rod bolts are in. Oil pan back on.

Attached a picture of the rod bolts in, and first time I've seen the cracked rod so snapped a picture of it.

Looks to me like someone didnt do an oil change religiously on that thing has way too much varnish from the oil on it IMO for only 9K miles. My 5.3 with 180K on it with the oil changed religiously looks about like yours. Hopefully nothing is wrong with it. Yeah the cracked rods are cool they are suppose to be alot stronger with that design. Rod bolts are easy to change when its on an engine stand huh?

Looks like it had Penzoil in it to me. I put a motor in my father in laws Ford a few yrs ago-he bought it new and changed the oil religiously every 3000 with 10w40 Penzoil dino oil. The motor was tired when I pulled it at 99k. When I showed him the internals (had to beat the lifters out of the bores, etc) he decided to change oil brands.

Anyways, you should be fine, run a good synthetic and beat the crap out of it !!!

Yeah it has a bit of varnish. I'm thinking its the original oil in it. Otherwise its mint. I sure wouldn't want to change out the rod bolts any other way.

I use mobile1 in my stuff but I will be switch to synthetic in my 418 as soon as I figure out my oil cunsumption problem. Good deal KY just remember when you go to drop it in, it makes life so much easier if you put a jack under the trans to lift the bellhousing up it will let the flywheel get in there SOOOOOOOOOO much easier.

Ky, judgin by that last pic you posted... there is absolutely NO FRIGGIN WAY that motor has 9k on it (with caveat that its been SEVERELY overheated)... I have NEVER NEVER EVER seen a GENIII motor look like that after pulling the front timing cover or pan area... even with 90k miles on it!

Sorry... if I'm a bit blunt... my advice is to promptly take that motor to a trusted machinest and have them do a complete check...

Bill

I would get it checked out like said above looks like it came out of a work truck that someone just didnt give a **** about and ran the **** out of it. I personally wouldnt trust it with that amount of varnish build up in it. My 6L core that I used for my 418 was burning oil and had 140K on it looked exactly like that motor color wise. Just dont want to see you have to pull the 6L back out because you over looked a spun bearing or whatever.
