personally for a 5.3L I would say anything over 4* starts getting too overkill. I'm running 0* overlap in my ecsb and it feels great but I definantly wouldn't go bigger since it's a daily driver, but if it was a weekend warrior I might step up to the 226/226 112 patriot cam or something like that.

Well then using the formula on the first page mine should have 3*. So what does a negative overlap do for performance? And mine is just an ole 5.7l

No overlap will give a smoother idle and good low speed torque but less peak HP. Adding overlap does the opposite: rougher idle, less low speed torque, higher torque peak and more top end power.
