The only difference between an LS1 and any 5.3L from 99 up (i believe thats the right year) Is the piston bore size. they use the same crank, and piston rods. The piston bore size is the ONLY difference in the internals. And of course the 5.3L is a cast block (most of the time)

The LS3 is a different motor. I believe the only thing you can run on a LS1, LS2, ect is the heads ASLONG as you run the intake with it also. But that combo is suppost to make some good numbers.

They do flow a little better. The 5.3l heads on an LS1 is a common upgrade to make a little more power, and if your gonna get a Z06 cam TURBO it. They LOVE turbos. Its like PB&J they just go together.

A Z06 cam is an awesome cam for an upgrade on a 5.3L. What kinda performance are you going for? Do you wanna be heard, like a lope or something like that or do you want it to be smooth but make power like a sleeper?
