Default 5.3 questions

Im looking at parts for my 5.3 swap into my 89, Im gunna go all through the 5.3 before i put it in.

Now I was wondering, can I put a higher compression piston in it with a stock bore, Id be willing to go .030 overbore if need be. Would this even be a worthwhile mod? Like I said Im already going through the motor so it will be apart, just trying to do little stuff to add up to more gains when its all done.

Id also like to find some place in West Michigan to have some p&p done on the heads, prob have the tb ported, mid length headers, cam, tune, stall.

Also, my bores still have crosshatching in them, how long would they stay that way, as far as I know its never been rebuilt, it came out of my friends truck. Im just wondering as to how many miles are on it and whether its been rebuilt or not.

Fixed link

You would have more options on a much bigger bore.
Is it the iron block?

stock bore 5.3 pistons or even .030 overbore are not an off-shelf part, they must be custom made. i suggest boring out to stock ls1 bore and using stock dimension ls1 parts, much cheaper anways

Yes its iron block.

So I should just have it bored to stock ls1 bore and then use a stock piston or can I still use a higher comp piston?

Even stock ls1 pistons would raise my comp then wouldnt they because Id basically have an ls1 with 5.3 heads?

bore it out to the stock ls1 bore and then you have a 5.7L iron block. you can put what ever compression pistons you want in it and you can get forged ones too

Would I be better off keeping my 5.3 heads or using LS1 heads, a friend of mine has a set hed pretty much give me. If I use the LS1 heads I'll just have them milled down a little to bump the cr back up, or use a higher comp piston.

ive heard that in order to get the comp. you want it is better to use pistons with the correct dish/flattop/dome to achieve it instead of milling heads, or using ones with a smaller combustion chamber.

that being said, id use some ls1 heads and a flattop piston or one that gets your CR where you want it

That makes sense.

So what should I look for as far as a cam for this. Its a rcsb probably will have a tb stall. 4.88 gears and a 35-36s, Ive got my gears but I havent decided on tires yet. I dont tow at all, the most it hauls is my 350 pound quad in the bed.
