Default 4.8l

So as it seems 4.8's are fairly easy to find as pullouts and also, slightly cheaper than dirt (everyone wants a 5.3 or 6.0 something tells me.) so I've been thinking: Why not?

Honestly though I don't know enough to know if just any 4.8 will do, or if I have to find one made at a certain time.

Basically I have a desire for 450hp at the crank from this little critter via a turbo and hopefully a nice little switch to turn it up a few notches for that "I'm not losing dang it!" run.

Any suggestions? I am a newb with anything but older small blocks (you know, back when carbs were in vogue.) So please try not to hate me too much.

just do a 5.3L. There is a pretty big difference between the 4.8 and 5.3L, but honeslty people aren't running THAT much better times between the 5.3L and 6.0.

You can snag a complete 5.3L with a wiring harness for under $900 and you'd need simple stuff like motor mounts and you can be up and running for around $1500

I can get the 4.8l's for really cheap, and I'm not really scared of killing it (except for having to take it out and put another in, engine swaps = pain in butt.)

I'm dithering on whether to go auto or manual. And trying to figure what it won't break. I know I'm going to do my axle, but what transmissions? I am definitely going to use this power so I want something that will take it.

So am I right in thinking that a 4.8 is a 4.8? No big changes that should affect how it will handle boost? 12 psi sounds about like my target, maybe a bit more. If I hit the same specific output as my buddy with the 5.3 I'll have at least 600 through. Granted my setup will probably be more tame than his and honestly I don't know if I could afford all the supporting bits to handle that power right away.

im running a stock tranny with vette servo's and transgo hd-2 shiftkit with a 2500-2800 stall converter, it has been holding up fine. I see about 190 to 200 degree tranny temps, in city, stop and go traffic.. without a tranny cooler. I will be putting one on this weekend. What is a good temp to be aiming for for the tranny? I'm only running 6psi though. When the methanol kit shows up then i'll be bumping the boost.
