I just towed a car on a trailer (5500 lbs) a couple hundred miles yesterday in my rcsb silverado 4.3 5 speed yesterday without issue.

I don't understand the "one and done" guys. They join the forum, make a post, and never show up again. I think it is the mods making these posts to stir up some controversy.

It's bad enough in the minitruck, but can't begin to imagine what possessed some "engineer" to think it was a good idea to put that steaming bucket of horse plop in a full-size truck. AFAIAC they should spend their eternity in Hell driving one around while everybody else gets LQ9s and L92s and such. Definitely not a topic for "performancetrucks.net". Maybe "gasmileagetrucks.net" or something.
What year is your son's? Another friend of mine had a late '80s 2.8 in a 2 door Jimmy and it was anemic. My 4.3 hauled *** up to 4k, but then tended to not do much else above that (5200 limiter)--I'm assuming because of the cam profile. The vortec heads and later fuel injection setups were large improvements over the TBI.

96-00 s-series trucks were also easily swapped to the vortec 5.7 with a couple of added wires for 2 additional fuel injectors, a reflashed ECM, electric radiator fans, and potentially recessing the radiator into the core support.

I would imagine the continued evolution of the 4.3 to the LS style ignition and fuel injection opens up some further potential for tuning and power adders that the previous generations couldn't support.
