Default 5.3 cam swap?

Anybody know what it takes to do a cam swap on these new motors? I was ordering comp cams 216/228 afm vvt cam with springs and push rods but my tuner says to hold off because he's not sure if we need to pull the motor out.. besides the DI what's different and more difficult for a cam swap??

He won't need to pull the engine, heads have to come off though.

Why would they need to come off?

the heads need to come off if you are changing the lifters to NON DOD lifters. This is the only way i have done it on the new motors. heads off, replace lifters and buckets with LS3 style, add the cam phaser limiter to the stock cam phaser, remove valley plate and block off oil control ports underneath and have the tuner delete any DOD controls. i have heard of other shops keeping the lifters that are already in there and just turning the DOD off. thats a little less work if thats actually possible. because you could use long rods to hold the lifters up but you have to remove the tension off of the rocker arms to push the lifters up which is easy. also you have to make sure to remove the lifter for the fuel lobe on the cam which is a new thing for these motors to avoid letting that center lifter fall down into the engine. On a corvette (2014) you have to remove the oil pan which requires dropping the subframe and remove the oil pump to get the cam gear off. PAIN IN THE a$$. NOT SURE if this is true for wet sump cars.

the cam is designed to retain DOD? I think one of the issues with the DOD lifters is that they aren't "safe" at increased lift. Definatly interested to see how that works though,
