Default Remote start

My truck didn't come with remote start, but I'd really like to have it during the winters here. I was wanting factory remote start kit for it, with the factory key fobs and all that good stuff, but it doesn't look like GM offers that.

I was wondering, if I buy a remote start kit and install it myself, I'm ASE electrically certified so it should be no problem, do I have to get rid of my factory key fob, or can I just have the factory fob to unlock the door, and the aftermarket one to start it. I wouldn't carry both with me, I'd keep the remote start one at home and just use it in the morning.

Or is there a way I can get all the factory componets for the remote start and add them myslef?

We had an aftermarket remote start on my wife's old Equinox...it had a little remote of its own. We carried the additional remote along with the factory keyless entry fobs...worked like a charm.

GM Accessories does offer a remote start upgrade kit for the NNBS trucks...not sure if you need the "remote starter prep package" option, though...

This is all I could find ebay link

And when I went to GMpartsdirect it said you need RPO code AP8 for that to work, which my truck doesn't have. I called the local chevy dealer and they said that GM doesn't offer a factory remote start kit that model except for when you order the truck brand new.

Yeah, on GM's accessory site, it says the kit requires AP8, which is the extended range keyless entry system.
