Play with your DIC until it shows real time mpg - it will also show 4 or 8 cylinder mode. If it ever shows 4 then you have the AFM motor with the crappy lifters among other things.

but you did say there was a knocking. Even the 5.3 I have had lifter issues, but fortunately they were covered under the extended warranty.

I was reading about those AFM motors, and wasn't quite sure that it was the issue.

I bet that if Max07 were to call the dealership and ask if the VIN on his truck read AMF, that could put him in that group. From there he maybe able to pinpoint "lifters of AMF blocks", just a thought.

I've fixed a few AFM 5.3L's for the dealership and it's the oil rings are stuck and carboned up along with excessive ring wear. I have been changing the piston's rings, and honing the cyl's. It has fixed the problem for now but I'm sure it will be back. That AFM is a shitty deal I would get rid of it asap. I just did one this last week here is the piston out of a 90K MI 2007.5 AFM I just pulled apart. Heads are nasty too...

Dam that don't look good for only 90k. After seeing those pics I don't think the valve cover replacement will do the job on my 5.3 6.2l here we come lol I wish.
