Default 87 octane

Does anyone ever run 87 octane in their 6.2? Would it destroy anything if you did? I never have. It's tempting when looking at the cost between the two. Just wondering what your experiences were....

I have an 87 tune and 75,000 miles on it! No problems yet! My sig has the times! My brother has 93 tune with same truck only different color and ran only .05 faster in the 1/8. Not a whole lot of difference IMHO

You just lose performance, no damage at all. The computer will take care of everything.

It is hard for me to make sense of spending $30K on a truck and then trying to save $5-7 a tank. But bad financial luck can strike any person at any time so I can certainly understand.

I am interested in this as well as our company gas tanks where I get most of my fuel is only 87 octane. I'm not going to pay for all of my fuel just so that it can be 92 when I can get $300+ of fuel per month for free.

The 87 oct is fine. Its just going to use the low octane spark table in the tune. So youll be losing a few HP but nothing all that noticeable.

Do you happen to know the differences in the timing tables? If it's only a couple degrees, I can see minimal gains.

There are more than just two options, high octane table or low octane table. The PCM can settle anywhere in between the two...for example, if the low octane table is calling for 10* and high is calling for 18*, it could end up at 15*. Every time you fill the truck up, it starts back in the high octane tables, and works its way down if it detects knock.

Anybody run data logs to see if there is any KR when they fill up with 87? Stock timing is so low, I'd be surprised to see any.

Yes, this is exactly what happened they cut my wife's hours at work. It would be a $75 monthly savings doing this alone. She went from 40 hours to 20 weekly. Gotta love it!!
Take care,
Matt
