07 Hummer H2 transfer case's encoder motor stuck in 4x4
07 Hummer H2 transfer case's encoder motor stuck in 4x4
I would like to be able to shift to 4low,4high an neutral in transfer case.
I've read that the grounding wires on the encoder motor to frame are prone to rust.
I'd like to clean these ground wires but don't know where they are.
how many are there?
I've sean videos on the 2500 trucks where there located under driver seat an there where like a small bunch of wires seamly attached to the frame. the H2 is basicely a 2500
however I couldn't locate these wires.could this be the problematic ground wire? I haven't looked at the TC for a ground.
will driving a 4x4 w/ a stuck in 4x4 encoder damage the transfer case. I believe this this 4x4 is the normal gear for driving on the street bc the H2 is alltime 4x4. theres no shifting to 2 wheel drive like the trucks.
I've only driven around the the block a couple times but am afraid I mite ruin the transfer case.
I have tryed pressing the buttons a bunch of times all successively.
please advice an thanks
Yup, same here. That seems to be the usual deal. Although mine was, it would just get stuck, nowhere in particular; usually 2HI or 4HI. Or, sometimes it would indicate N, butt would be in 2HI or whatever, and would show "Service 4WD" in the DIC.
There's a whole cluster of grounds on a bracket that's part of the frame, right under the driver's side firewall, next to the ABS controller. The FSM calls it "left front body mount". One of those is for the encoder; seems like another is for the axle actuator, and another is for the ABS. Not likely to be the problem though. Not "impossible"; just, not all that likely. Not sure what that is that you have circled; might also not be factory, whatever it is. Although, if that's the wires that used to go to the frame, then it could definitely be wRong, since the transfer case isn't really "ground", and those wires really need to go to a good solid ground.
Somebody has obviously been up under there dinking with the wiring and moving it around. It's clearly not in the factory location; they didn't use wadded up messes of tie wraps like is in that photo. Instead, the various connectors have little clippy places that clip onto metal tabs somewhere; that one with the yellow wires probably has one of those, that it's not clipped onto because it's been re-routed for whyever. Might not be a bad idea to put it all back like it belongs, including putting the grounds back to the frame like they belong if they've been moved, then troubleshoot further if necessary.
When mine got stuck in 4x4 the encoder had to be replaced.
thanks Cordova for infor I'd still like t attempt cleaning the grounds. I believe you don't just slap a new encoder on any ole way an call it a day. example windsheild wiper. this encoder has to be clocked correcly. to be in correct phase, mite be to conpilcated for me.

thats not my H2 but someone on fakebook who took a video of the encoder I really couldn't see anything so I circled the image an asked here w/ the truck experts.
my H2 doesn't have 2hi or 2 low just 4high 4low an 4x4 of course neutrel. I'm not planning to do any off roading anytime soon so really no need for the 4low or 4high. will I ruin the transfercase if I drive it on the street w/ it stuck in 4x4 like this is the default gear correct like aren't the 4low an 4high extra torque gears only for offroad low speed. an 4x4 basiecly bypass's these 4low 4high?
I'll crawl underthere an look for "a whole cluster of grounds on a bracket that's part of the frame, right under the driver's side firewall" will report back.
edit: IIRC I've also read about a bunch of problematic grounds inside the front frame rail at the front bumper?
thanks RB04Av
Turning the steering wheel on pavement in 4wd is tough on it.
If you are driving it in a turn and you fell it bucking, that is hard on it in the long run.
When mine died I was over 200 miles from home and everything was fine, but I did get it replaced as soon as possible.

I'm a little confussed this H2 is driven by default in 4x4. did you mean to say when driving 4low on the strreet is had on it?
I've read you can't exceed a certain lowish speed in 4Low. I've only driven it a little in backyard 1/2acre an around the block a few times both times in default 4x4.
I would like to toad tow w/ a tow bar if it's possiable to shift transfer case into nuetrel. can this be done manuely?
