I had heard about this myself. I actually think its kind of a cool idea. Like the Tacomas have the pre-runners. I had wondered why the other brands hadn't done it sooner. The way I understand it, is that the Z71 package is an add on Off-Road Package. All Z71's start off life as a 4x4, and the Z71's add the skid plates and shocks and such. I could be wrong, but from one who owns a Z71, I like it. We do use our 4x4, but not that much, I wouldn't mind driving a 2wd Z71 myself.

Yeah, I remember when Chevy came out with the Tracker ZR2! My last truck was a ZR2 and over on ZR2.com, that Tracker pissed off a LOT of people. Some poor guy who was proud as punch of his new Tracker posted on ZR2 to 'talk' with other ZR2 owners and to provide a link to his web site. It got ugly. One member PM'd the guy with his personal opinion and the Tracker owner ended up canceling his board membership and killing his web site.

I don't know, as I've gotten older this type of marketing hype doesn't really bother me much, but I'm old-school. I think these special option packages should remain true to their original specs...period.

I wouldnt exactly say the "Z71" has a heritage behind it. You arent losing anything are you? I was always under the impression that Z71 was an offroad package. My dad has a 4X4. But it doesnt have Z71 badges. If GM put "4X4" on a 2WD truck THEN I'd be scratching my head. WTF?

So your OK with seeing a Z-71 and having to ask if its four wheel drive when for the past 19 years they have always been 4x4? I think its bullshit and a ripoff.

YA......And I am tired of explaining to people that my truck is AWD not 4WD, they need a AWD sticker on it too so I have one more decal to remove.. Good Morning Tim

Hey Tim, I think I may still have my Z71 stickers off my old Z somewhere if you want them for your diesel. That would be cool. Right?

Disclaimer- Any of you who may take this wrong this is just me giving Tim a hard time.

GM has a history of building a product with real appeal and then trying to use the name to sell something that will not sell itself. In addition to the SS models mentioned above, see Malibu, Impala, LeMans, etc.

I'm one of the few lifted 2wd guys on here, and I wouldn't consider putting Z71 stickers on my truck, in fact, if I bought a 4wd Z71, I'd probably peel them off, just not my style. A vehicle is what it is, however anyone (the factory included) likes to present it doesn't mean too much either way to me.

So are the 2wd Z71's going to sit up higher? Would the coil overs (on the NNBS both 2wd and 4wd) make it easier to lift? I haven't seen anything aftermarket pop up yet, but I'm sure that they are working on it. It would be good to not have the spindle issues that the 99-06 2wd lifts have.

It would be very analagous to the Prerunner Tacomas that way.
