My sister got in an accident with here Saturn Ion, while she was traveling at a slow speed (30-40mph) and here airbags went off. She t-boned them in their rear quarter panel. IGNORE this but a Toyota Matrix is not the same as a Vibe (Vibe = ---- Matrix = jap)

One of the sensors that Toyota uses, or used to use is a deceleration sensor, which is located in the center SRS module (air bag computer). It's basically a pendulum that swings back and forth and breaks a tiny light beam when it reaches a certain angle.

Also, depending on the manufacturer and the year of the vehicle, there are certain parts of the SRS system that must be replaced any time an airbag deploys...parts such as the main computer, front sensors, seat belts (if equipped with charged pre-tensioners), etc.

theres diffrent types of crash sensors. im not sure how many.. some are more sensitive than others... when i wrecked my tahoe both front airbags went off, and i was only going about 40 mph... i guess it really just depends on your cituation.
