Went to the track, ran a new best and tested ram-air mod! Long!
As I posted, I went to test & tune day at Sacramento raceway. I was going to test the ram-air mod and air filters but I could only do the ram-air mod comparison, no time to compare a K&N filter to a Purolator paper filter.. There were alot of cars, about 1/3 were real drag cars so my runs were limited. I took the ram-air off my truck last night and put the stock lower airbox back on my truck for the drive up but I cleaned it up some. The upper air inlet on the airbox was smaller than the opening on the fender because of little pieces of plastic that weren't cleaned off after it was made. I used a Dremel tool to clean it up and made the opening bigger. The opening in the fender for the lower air inlet was smaller than the inlet on the airbox so I used a grinding bit on the Dremel and opened it up some. Now both holes in the fenders are the same size as the air inlets on the airbox. My first two runs were without the ram-air, the second two were with. The results are surprising!
NO Ram-Air:
#1 14.861 @ 91.823 w/ a 2.200 60'. Good run, little tire spin & left lane. Close to my old best of 14.85.
#2 14.761 @ 92.237 w/ a 2.093 60'. Great run, new best! NO tire spin & right lane.
WITH Ram-Air:
#3 14.908 @ 92.307 w/ a 2.265 60'. Good run, little tire spin & right lane.
#4 14.969 @ 92.469 w/ a 2.374 60'. BAD run, BAD tire spin & left lane.
Both runs without the ram-air mod were quicker and had better 60' times than with the ram-air BUT the MPH on the ram-air mod runs were higher. What does that mean? With the mod you lose low end but gain high end? Now this is with NO time for the ECM to adjust for the additional airflow of the ram-air mod. Over time it may get better but who knows. Like I said, I wanted to do an air filter comparison but I didn't have time, only got four runs in before I had to go. However, in my own 0-60 & 0-90 stop watch runs, my truck is quicker with a Purolator paper filter than with a K&N. Of course, the track may have different results. Thought I would share my findings!
