Valve Spring compressor Tools
#12
While the dual-spring Crane/Vinci style compressors work well, keep in mind that if you plan on using one for multiple engines; i.e. cathedral port heads and/or rectangular port heads you will need more than one tool, as the spacing of the rocker stands are different between the two. This is where the tools like those available from Lingenfelter shine, as they simply line up with each single valve-spring. No, you will no longer be able to work two at a time, but it’s no great inconvenience.
While in a pinch, the simple little claw type auto-parts store will get the job done, they are best left to engines that have single-coil springs. They are just too much a pain in the rear to use on a dual-spring and one stands too great a chance of then slipping and possibly causing you to drop a valve, shooting a keeper across the garage or down in the head, or worse possible injury. Forget trying to use one a head with triple-springs, as it aint going to happen. Tools like these are something you can keep in your favorite box for years to come, so you might as well spend your money wisely and get one that you will be proud to own and use.
