Sounds like the check valve in the pump ot the regulator is leaking. Does it only have trouble when it sits for a while?

when you turn the key to the on position can you hear the fuel pump run for a couple secs?
if not its prob the fuel pump relay....
the pump wont turn on until there's some oil pressure if its bad
if it does turn on initially see above

Default Help!!!!!!!hard starting 00' 5.3

My wifes wifes suburban is having a similar problem.
Has 60k miles on it. Im on my second fuel pump (has about 30,000 miles on it)
Anyway when you the key you first hear the pump run, then when you start to crank it, it really takes a while to start. then a puff of smoke comes out the exhaust. Its like it not getting enough fuel.
Any suggestions???????? Ist there a one way check valve some where in the system between the pump in the tank and the injectors?

This is screaming fuel pump problem, but has the fuel filter been changed. The pumps are notorious for failure, seen many sometimes due to no filter changes. They act up cold mostly, not able to muster enough pressure/volume. I believe the 96 is the entire tank module to replace the pump any way. Use delco pump also< higly suggested. If your a repeat failure pump, empty & clean the gas tank out. Then start with fresh fuel. Use the old gas in something else. Might be a good idea to do this w/a 100K'er anyway.

The fuel filter was changed recently and the pump was never changed. So yeah it is time to change the pump.

Also check out the plug at the sending unit. They were bad in the earlier years about getting hot and burning wires and connectors.
