Default Tranny swap...what to do?

With the Heads Cam install hapening in a week, I am starting to fear for the stock 4L65E with 108K on it. First, should I be worried, I am expecting to be in the 380-390RWHP and well over that mark with TQ after the swap. Keeping in mind that this is in an AWD SSS, should I be concerned? I know that the 65s are a better than the 60s, but how much better? Also, If I do change, would I be better off with a junkyard 80e or a built 65e?

Built 65E they are a decent trans when built right, but it seems like a crapshoot with the 60 series of GM tranny's. It's your call, the 80 robs some extra power from you but shouldnt break on ya either. The 65E when built should also last while not robbing as much power from you.

thats my one reservation with the 80, the power robbing that happens. I know its justified but still...

My other concern is I have read alot about people breaking their built trannies after a few thousand miles. What is that about? I am looking more for reliability that anything else. Would an untouched 80 be better suited for that?

also, with the 80 I know that I would need a custom rear driveshaft because of the longer tailshaft, but does that affect the install of the transfer case and front driveshaft?

FLT Level5 4L65E, or if you're really concerned, go with FLT's new Level7 Maximum Performance trans.

I say run untill it let's go. Who knows, if you're not absolutely abusing and azz-raping the truck everytime you leave a stop light, the OEM 4l60E may last longer than you think. There's good and bad in everything you buy. In what I'm familiar with, I've seen alot and owned and "Built" 4L60E and it took more abuse than guys who were running 4L80's right along side of me. So...to each his own, but anything done correctly will last if you treat it right.

I'd recommend the Lvl 5 4L65 from FLT as well. It's what is currently being built for my truck as we speak and I run the 6.0 AWD as well. I'd go with an 80E is you plan on doing a sweet super charger setup later down the road and have the money to play with now. But the Lvl 5 won't break the bank and will take a beating. Also obviously you need to purchase an aftermarket TC for it too. I'm going with a Yank SST3200 in mine. I don't tow or anything i'm strictly performance. But a 2600 or 2800 would be good.
