Default Trailer Wiring Question

I have an 01 silverado that didn't come with a tow set up. I picked up a hitch and am getting ready to put it on. I found a connector set up on ebay and bought it, for a 7 wire factory type connector. Well, when i got it, it came with just the 7 wire plug and a bracket for it. The guys says there should be a pre-wired connector under my truck that plugs into it, there is not. There is however, about a 2ft section of harness that has 6 loose wires that have heat shrink on the end. I'm guessing that is the trailer part that i need. I'm just wondering if there is a way to get a factory type connector to splice into those? or how do most people hook this up? Thanks for any help.

you should be able to buy a kit that will just go inbetween the connections for your tail lights. as far as hard wiring them in i can not remember the wire connectivity

yea, i found those online too. The only thing with that is that is just for a 4 wire, and eventually i want to be able to run a brake. I've heard if you use the prewired factory set up that you can just use a plug under the dash for the brake too. That would save on having to run wires myself.

that is what i have. i just took the harness plugged it in under the dash then in to the back of my brake controller. you should be able to buy a factory 7 pin harness that works along the same lines as the one i spoke of above.

Thanks, i thought they only had those for 4 pin. I'll have to look around.

What part did you buy? Do you have the female connector that attaches to the hitch or bumper with a bracket? If you do then the wires tucked up under the bed in the area of the spare tire should just connect to the back of the connector and be held in place with a set screw in the connector in each location. It should have come with a color code sheet to show which wire to attach to which spot on the trailer connector. If it does not come with a coding sheet it should at least have the standard positions marked and you can use a test light to determine which wire to fasten in each location on the connector. The brake lights run in a common wire with the turn signals.
