Actually, I used a 16mm line wrench on the line fittings and held the filter in place with a medium sized adjustable wrench. My truck is a 2000, and they broke loose fairly easily by offsetting the wrenches and "pulling" the two wrenches together. Once loose, I did spray a little CRC Rust Penetrant on them, as I didn't want to gawl them all up, and I had it handy. Very little fuel came out...very little. It was just enuff to run down my arm and cool me off

I just talked to my friend who Has a shop and he told me to just use 2 wrenches like badmofo said..... and dont be afraid to put some pressure...... hes had some really tough ones, but just put some muscle into it, you shouldnt hurt it.

of course use common sense..... if you feel it rounding off... then use the torch...

That's why I like using line wrenches on line fittings. There is no way to round one off with a line wrench.

As clean as you keep your truck I'm surprised there was any dirt ANYWHERE on it...even in the fuel filter

Can you get the in-tank style of filters? I called GM, gave them my model, blah, blah... and they said you must get the complete assembly. I did not ask how much that was or what exactly it consisted of, but sounds expensive too me. Maybe aftermarket. I would love to have changed mine on my Radix install. 108,000 km and fuel looked clean with no dirt or anything in tank, and strainer was clean looking but come on, it surely can't hurt to change it.
