Default Tailgate Cables

Well I was loading a 1000#+ pallet of groceries in the back of my truck yesterday for a delivery and I couldn't find a screwdriver (the right hinge is clamped on because it kept falling off) so I said f*#$ it let's put it as far as we can. Well it was about 3/4 in the bed and 1/4 on the tailgate and the first little bump I hit I head BANG well I thought it was a shock or something since it was bottomed out big time, but later that night I found both cables had snapped. By some miracle the tailgate only got minor clearcoat scratches and no dents. It turns out the cables were totally rotted inside!!! The new ones were $15 each at the dealer and they are a little different so maybe they are improved. Just thought I would warn you guys with 99-00 trucks, the cables are probably rotted and could break easy. If anybody else has a story about the cables breaking post it here.

Yea, I remember reading that the 99 and 00 had problems with the insides rusting and snapping.
Glad they fixed that on the 2001s

Hey Cash...did you get my PM? I would like that fog light wiring harness

Good because I the new cables have a different cover on them, maybe they are more water proof or something. What is your email address? I have to tell you something about the harness before I send it to you.

One of mine broke a few months ago so I went to the dealership about it. My servive consultant said they were replacing them for free, since the old ones were defective. The new ones are working a lot better!

hey don't be so sure yours won't rust out. mine did on my 01. i went to the dealership after a few people on here said they would get replaced. no such luck for me. that's one thing that i need to replace soon. sucks taking tailgate off to load and unload a atv.

mine broke when my wife was loading my atv. she's pregnant too. that would have been nasty if she would have only been half way instead of 3/4's of the way in.

Man these cables are f*cking pathetic. All of the weight is on the left cable so when it snaps, the sudden stress on the right cable is going to snap it too. Does anybody have cables where one has slack in it? My 92 Silverado had metal brackets that supported the tailgate and they never broke over 10 years but everything else on the truck did
