I had a problem with melting as well. I took the lense off the fog light and removed the metal reflector and reinstalled the bulbs. No problems since. They put out alot of light compared to stock with the metal reflector installed.

The lense cover is very easy to get off if you are gentle and some clear silicone sealed it right back up. To get the metal reflector out I just used some needle nose pliers and a good bit of wiggling/pulling. eventually they came out.

I have been thinking of doing this same thing. I was just worried about the lens getting melted/distorted without the reflector acting a heat shield. I noticed the little while I was running SilverStar fogs(before I hit a big puddle and knocked them out) that the color was not a brillant white like the headlights. I concluded this was due to the reflector as it tarnishes once it gets heated up a few times. I removed the reflector out of a spare light I had laying around to test it but just havent picked up any more bulbs.

I had the piaa's and I was not impressed at all. they were dimmer than the silverstars I replaced to I took them back and got some called Visions or somethin and I like those. I have the 880's coming for my fogs they should be here soon so we'll see how they work.

You can see the difference between them and the factory fogs.
