Hmmm......that's a good question. I thought so too.
There has to be bolts there as well, I would think.
Maybe it's the same stuff they use in the bed of our trucks that look like welds, but is actually painted epoxy.
I would go look at my truck, but it's raining right now.
Your talking about the part of the hinge that is attached to the body pillar.
I know the part of the hinge that bolts to the door isn't welded for sure.
Anyone else know about the hinges being welded to the body pillar?

According to my 03 Service Manual, granted its for the GM SUV's. It clearly indicates that both sides of the door hinges are held in place by FOUR welds.

I thought it looked that way. I took a look at mine today, and it looks like it's welded.
Guess you guys that directed him to just buy a set of hinges and replace them yourself need to give this guy a hand doing this.
Good Luck!

The hinges appear to be welded to the door, but some type of epoxy (it's not hard like a weld) holding it to the body. The epoxy on my top hinge has a crack like it might fail soon and is making a creaking sound whenever the door is fully opened and hits the bump stops. Some guy on another board said it was called "vette glue" Any idea how to repair it? Sorry to bring up this old topic, but I like to do a search and see if a similar problem has been brought up before.
