Default speedometer not working

Hi guys, I need some help, I have a '04 RST silverado that my speedometer quit working. My trip and odometer work and mark the miles but the speedometer doesn't. Sometimes it might move and show some kind of readidng but not accurate. Any ideas or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The stepper motors for the gauges are common failures on the 03-04's I believe...

Ya as long as you are under 70,000 miles. There is special policy that will cover the cost of replacement at the dealer. and if your 70k-80k it covers the cost of the cluster you pay the labor witch is around 1.5 hours=$150.

Call your local dealer with your VIN and current mileage, and ask them about a "Special Policy" regarding your instrument cluster.

Yes indeed the stepper motor inside the Instrument Cluster is bad. I get this same complaint probably 15 times a week!!!! There is a GM Special Policy that up's the warranty coverange ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ONLY, on trucks up to 2004. This is a common problem and any GM dealer can fix the issue for you. Now...if you would like, you can post up your VIN # and I'll check it for the proper warranty coverage.

So far not on the 2005's, no extended warranty coverage.

My truck has around 103000 miles, and I REALLY don't feel like shelling about 300 - 600 bucks for a new cluster. Mine only does it randomly if i drive it hard or brake hard. If i let it sit for about 30 minutes to an hour turned off it will reset.

same deal with my '03, the speedo started ticking instead of having a smooth, sweeping movement; and the tach acted funny sometimes, like starting out at 3000 rpm instead of 0 occassionally. dealer replaced it under their special policy, which was very nice of them considering I had 92k on the clock at the time.
