I've never been a huge diesel fan but seeing those huge trucks run insane times at the track .....having a factory "performance" model would be pretty cool!

is GM stepping up to the plate or are these just computer rendered concepts that will never see the assembly line?

Thats alot of torque. One of the reasons I think they upped it to 700 ft.lbs is because Toyota came out and said they were coming out with a heavy duty diesel truck with 700 ft/lbs of tq to rival GM's best of 605. Look who beat them to the punch, muhahaha!

I'm not sure whats on the regular Duramax's, but this sounds like a pretty nice list of improvements:
Intercooler added to turbocharging system
Improved engine breathing with new air box and massive exhaust system
Allison heavy-transmission utilizes reprogrammed shift schedules
A 11.5-inch rear axle assembly handles the additional power from the drivetrain
Grill and hood from the 2500 Silverado HD
Suspension lowered, and custom wheels and tires fill wheel wells
Customfour-piece tonneau cover protects the short box and its cargo while allowing gooseneck trailering with removal of the center panel.
Integrated towing package features a folding mounting ball, brake controller and auxiliary gauges
Custom trim pieces for instrument cluster and doors
